Living for quarter of a century *lights Cuban cigar*, really puts things into perspective. Well not really. I'm more adamant than ever to stop doing things that get me down and start doing the things I love. Let me get real with you ... I've been busy, my intergalactic technological device (also know as a PC) broke down which allowed me to do other things than take pictures of things and search the interwebs like for instance, going outside. Yeah I've been living that 2015 life-style ...
These months are flying by, I can't believe July is ending has ended ... and I haven't even travelled yet - I mean the only time my feet leave English soil is when I lift them up on my bed to sleep at night ... tragic. Alright dry jokes aside - I've been minimising and thinking how to pull things together. I guess by now, I know a few things or two - like how to work a washing machine on various cycles, how to microwave a meal and most importantly how to fold socks (you'd be surprised how many people mess that up). Alright I'll be serious ...the most exciting things I've been doing have been mind related. Not only have I been clearing out physical clutter (a whole suitcase worth) but the mental cobwebs as well.
Over these bloggin years I've gained a lil more confidence in myself and its really given me the ability to a bit more myself with not only others but with me as well. In a celebratory way I decided to do a tag ... I have chosen - The Makeup Tag to help us get to know each other better. I tag everyone who wants to do the tag :)
The Makeup Tag
1. How old were you when you started wearing makeup? Hmm a full face ... around 22. Yep late bloomer. However, if your talking about nail varnish 15/16 onwards (buying it myself and wearing it).
2. How did you get into makeup? Well, after reading various magazines I became interested in the looks and wanted to see what makeup could do for me. So, I bought my first eye shadow at 16-17 (a black) and experimented at home but never wore it or even used it. Buying it actually put me off facial makeup - since applying big black smudges on my eyes with my fingers (had no brushes) really made me believe that makeup was not for me and couldn't help me at all so, I forgot about it until I turned 19 ... Nail varnish I kinda always liked (had my toes painted black at 6) especially when I was 11 and my mother bought me my first nail polish (that I begged for in a store) it was glittery!
3. What are some of your favourite brands? Tough question since I'm not loyal to any brands. I really like to support cruelty free, independent/indie and organic/natural brands. However to answer this question I'll throw that all out the window and pick 5 brands that when I'm not being so picky I gravitate towards). Maybelline- because their affordable and quite innovative with the products they make (paint pots, vibrant lipsticks, various foundations shades), Sleek and Milani because their products are also affordable and insanely pigmented (love the blushes I've tried from both). Black Opal because they offer foundation shades that can be used on dark or light skin tones (Same Fine uses them - if its good enough for him its good enough for me). Inglot because they offer a vast array of shades from neutral to quirky to outrageously odd - They have so many colours and shades that you could literally find any shade you needed there - plus they're free system appeals to the minimalist in me and they're not too expensive.
4. What does makeup mean to you? Nothing and everything all at the same time. I grew up in a house/home where makeup did not exist (clear nail varnish did though), soap and water ruled the day and my only saving grace was moisturiser (which is my long time love). I can go weeks without wearing makeup so when I wear it, its not because of feelings of inadequacy but more a celebration of its artistry and my own features/beauty. It allows me to express, celebrate and create.
5. If you could only wear 4 products on your face what would they be? Moisturiser, a lip product (can't choose a specific one), a blush and maybe a little foundation so the blush showed up better on an even canvas.
6. What is your favourite thing about makeup?Colours - that's why I love lip products because you can literally wear all the shades!
7. What do you think about drugstore makeup vs high end makeup? I don't think that high end makeup is necessarily any better than drugstore makeup. Especially when higher brand ingredients can have just as many irritating ingredients in them and still not be cruelty free. I have a few high end products in my collection and them being high end, really doesn't make me value them any more than drugstore products. It really depends on how the item will/does work for you and the reason you buy it. Ultimately, if I can get a product that's inexpensive and ticks all the right boxes it will win over any high end/priced product any-day.
8. What is one tip of advice you can give to a beginner? Remember that you're beautiful without it and have fun!
9. What is one makeup trend you never understood?Over plucking eyebrows and then drawing them on harshly. I understand this for a drag look or if you're very experimental with your face and how you want to be portrayed but, when you accompany it with a natural face - I get confused. Anyway, my eyebrows are bushy - never plucked/shaped them - so never mind me.
10. What do you think about the beauty community on YouTube/Blogging?
Mixed emotions - mostly good. The Youtube beauty community really helped me in the beginning feel more relatable to makeup when I saw girls like me using it to express their beauty and identity. However, in recent times parts of the "community" have really become commercialised (same looks, same hauls etc.) and affiliated so much with brands wanting to utilise a Youtubers follower status (or a Youtuber wanting to gain more followers to get money/status) that it can be hard to distinguish when you are or not being sold to, especially when affiliates and sponsorship are indiscreetly or not declared. Plus, I feel like there is a lot of fakeness going on - not only fake personalities but nose jobs, lip injections, boob jobs, botox etc. which doesn't suit my personal ethos in life and for makeup. However, there are some real gems to be found and the largely positive vibe that 'makeup is for all' can be and is really inspiring.
Speaking about the blogging beauty community. I think there's less drama and folks are just more real - its hard to lie and type at the same time ... *liar* lol. Yes, sponsorships and affiliates do happen too - y'all know about that the asterisk * that get used (rolls eyes) not by me though I use asterisk in a different way ... I think trends don't hit as hard on the blogsphere as on youtube so most bloggers gravitate towards their own beat - what works for them - rather than what's hot right now (well depending on the blogger) but that's not to say that they are not hip/with it. I appreciate both forms of social media, they both have their good + bad points and each have a special place on my bookmarks bar :)
... The end.
