Explosion markers for The Bridge at Remagen

Thanks to Big Lee for the pointers on these.  For our Joy of Six demo (The Bridge at Remagen) we needed some big explosion markers to denote the bridge being blown by the Germans so I took some of his technique and applied my own elements to it (see below).

I definitely find florist wire easier to use and they come in foot long strips and cost buttons.  Any pliers will cut them (you can get quite thin florist wire) and they are very pliable,

Simple to make

1. Take a circular mdf base (ones shown are 3cm across).
2. Drill 5-6 small holes in them using a pin vice or similar.
3. Cut 5-6 lengths of florist wire (very thin and flexible) to different lengths of between 8cm and 4 cm
length.  I use florist wire as it is coated with a paper like substance which takes glue much better than bare wire.
4. Superglue the wire into the holes with the longest length of wire in the middle.
5. Once set, bend the wires outwards from the centre creating a splayed effect.
6. Glue the wires (PVA or Bostik will do) and attach foliage flock.  I tend to use stuff like rubberised horsehair as it tends not to crumble and comes in solid little clumps.  I slide these down the glued wire to stick them in place or stick them alongside.  Note that you need a lot of glue to do this - too little and the clumps may detach.
7. Fill in any gaps in the structure to cover any holes or bare wires in the same way - generous dollop of glue and push the foliage clump in to fill the gap.
8. Let it all dry overnight.
9. Once dry, spray with a black primer followed quick spurts of grey primer then a gentle dusting of white (you can get tins of primer from Halfords or Wilkinsons).  Or you can choose a colour of choice (e.g. sandy for the desert).  But for our needs, grey is best.
10. Once happy with the finish leave as they are OR give a quick spray with a matt varnish.
